What is Earth Day?
Earth Day is an annual event that started in 1970 to celebrate environmental initiatives. Millions of people around the globe come together to mark the progress that has been made, and also to plan and push for better, greener policies around the world.
The theme of Earth Day 2026 is "Our Power, Our Planet". It's a reminder that environmental progress isn't down to one government or person. This is something we all work at together. Whether that's an entire country choosing to change an environmental policy, or a single family trying to recycle.
For a business like ours, we focus on reviewing our environmental impact and our commitment to sustainability.
Is April 22 always Earth Day?
Yes, Earth Day is always on the 22nd of April. However, events can start ramping up from the 18th and can continue for the following week. Events range from community cleanups, tree planting, environmental teach-ins, picnics and other opportunities for public education.
Making a Commitment to Sustainability
As Earth Day nears, we take this opportunity to reassess our own commitments to sustainability and reduce our carbon footprint. Amid climate change and a plastic pollution crisis, choices by businesses and consumers matter.
At William Wood, we’re committed to more than just creating beautiful mirrors. Recognising our role in environmental stewardship, we integrate sustainability into every aspect of our business, from design and manufacturing to packaging and shipping. Our aim is to produce functional and curated pieces that are ethically made and have a positive impact on the planet.
These are the steps we take to minimise our impact on the environment:
Offset Carbon Emissions
For every delivery we partner with Shopify Planet to offset carbon emissions and ensure that every order is carbon-neutral. This works through a range of carbon capture initiatives to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
We also plant a tree for every order, through our partnership with Ecodrive. When making an order, you can also choose to double-up the donation to plant your own tree. So far, we've planted more than 200,000 trees, working to restore forests and stabilise coastlines.

Use of Sustainable Materials
We use 100% sustainably sourced Paulownia Wood for almost all of our wooden framed mirrors. We prefer Paulownia wood for a number of reasons. As one of the fastest-growing trees in the world, Paulownia can be harvested quickly, making it a highly renewable resource with significant environmental advantages.
The wood is lightweight, durable, and resistant to warping, enhancing its suitability for high quality furniture pieces. Beyond sustainability, Paulownia is also valued for its natural beauty, featuring a luxurious open grain and warm colour.

Designed to Last
At William Wood, we focus on designs that we define as "timeless pieces". This means that our mirrors are meticulously designed not for fleeting, trend driven consumption but for enduring style, quality, and relevance.
By focusing on classic aesthetics and high-quality craftsmanship, we create products that our customers will cherish and display for years to come. This thoughtful approach directly counters the detrimental "fast fashion" model, which too often leads to excessive waste and a significantly larger environmental footprint.
Keeping Plastic Out of Our Oceans
Every year, we partner with Cleanhub to keep over 10,000 kg of plastics from reaching our oceans. Through this program, we actively contribute to the protection of marine life and critical ecosystems that are threatened by plastic pollution. We help to fund plastic waste collection in coastal communities where these services didn't previously exist.

Beyond Earth Day
This Earth Day, we celebrate the steps that we have taken to ensure that we are sustainably conscious as a business. We understand that our role as a business goes beyond creating beautiful and carefully curated products, and extends to contributing to the health, preservation and restoration of our planet, both for now and for future generations.
By shopping our range of products, our customers can rest assured that environmental impact has been taken into consideration at every step, and that their order will not contribute to unnecessary carbon emissions or harm to the planet.
